Dean’s Welcome
Welcome to the Westhampton College Web site! Here, you will find information about the history, traditions and significance of Westhampton College as well as an overview of what it means to be a Westhampton student and how our programs can benefit you.
The University of Richmond encompasses two gender-based colleges that focus on undergraduates primarily in their out-of-classroom experiences: female students belong to Westhampton College and male students belong to Richmond College. Each college has a dean's office that works with students in their overall development; each college also offers important university traditions that celebrate and continue the legacy of our predecessors. The University's distinctive gender-based learning system increases the attention that our faculty and staff give each student as he or she grows and develops at the University of Richmond.
Voluminous research indicates that students who enroll in gender-separate college communities, such as Westhampton College, develop a greater sense of autonomy and are more successful in their post-collegiate careers than women enrolled in strictly coeducational institutions. Keeping each student's "whole person" in mind, we have designed each Westhampton College program to strenghten our students' intellectual and personal development.
Student leaders may excel in formal leadership programs such as Westhampton College governance, the residence life system, and our ground-breaking Women Involved in Living and Learning (WILL) program. Less formally, programs produced out of the College and interactions with the Westhampton College staff illustrate the benefits of a women's college within a coeducational setting.
Our goal is that each of our students discovers that life outside the classroom is just as important as learning inside the classroom - indeed, the two are often intertwined. Whether a student is a government leader, a resident assistant, or a member of the WILL program, she will make connections between coursework and co-curricular life that prepare her for life and leadership in her family, community, and post-graduate career.
Upon enrolling at the University, Westhampton College students join a long tradition of progressive women who understand and appreciate that gender education makes them better thinkers and stronger people. In turn, we expect they will create new opportunities to be handed down to future generations of Westhampton women.
